Three Putt

Bogey or Better

Set your own line for bogey-or-better holes. Beat it and split the pot.

2 or more players

Bogey or Better is a personal over/under bet. Before the round, each player sets their own line: the number of holes they think they'll play to bogey or better (a score of one over par or lower). Then you try to beat your own number.

It's a nice equalizer because everyone competes against their own line rather than each other's raw scores, so a mid-handicapper and a low-handicapper can both win on the same day.

How to play Bogey or Better

  1. 1
    Set your line

Each player picks a target number of bogey-or-better holes for the round, for example 'at least 11 holes at bogey or better.'

  2. 2
    Everyone antes

All players who set a line put an agreed amount into the pot.

  3. 3
    Count bogey-or-better holes

During the round, count how many holes each player scored at bogey or better (par plus one, or lower).

  4. 4
    Beat your line to win

Players who finish above their line are winners and split the pot. Coming up short means you don't cash.

A quick example

Common variations

The tie rule

Decide what happens when a player exactly matches their line: a 'push' refunds their ante, while 'count as a miss' sends it to the pot.

A friendly side bet

Since you set your own line, keep the stakes light. It works best layered on top of another game.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as bogey or better?

Any hole you finish at one over par or lower: bogey, par, birdie, eagle, and so on. Double bogey or worse does not count.

How do you win Bogey or Better?

By finishing the round with more bogey-or-better holes than the line you set for yourself. Everyone who beats their own line splits the pot.
